The FDA’s approval on Thursday of Trimeris’ new aids drug Fuzeon highlighted a busy week for entrepreneurs and those involved in the life science, biotech and high tech sectors.

The Fuzeon decision generated headlines worldwide, reflecting medical science’s continuing battle to deal with the AIDS menace, which has killed nearly 30 million people. Fuzeon isn’t a cure, but it is a help for the thousands who have been treated by other drugs that are no longer — or ever were — effective.

Other good news on the drug front included the FDA’s acceptance of a new drug proposal from Pozen for its injectable migraine headache drug. And two NCSU professors reported a breakthrough in transgenic research.

Meanwhile, three venture capital deals closed, including OncoGenome, a European-based firm which has its US headquarters in Durham.
