In a week when the Research Triangle Regional Partnership issued a report outlining the challenges the region faces in trying to grow its biotech and life science industrial base, a couple of developments pointed to the industry’s importance.
If North Carolina, and the RTP area in particular, is to continue to have a growing biotechnology and life science industry, state leaders must be more proactive in order to counter ever-increasing competition.
That’s the conclusion of a new 21-page report commissioned by the Research Triangle Regional Partnership, the NC Biotechnology Center, the NC Biosciences Organization and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
Meanwhile, BioStratum disclosed its involvement in the development of a potential cancer test that could be crucial to early treatment for patients. And a drug for the treatment of people suffering effects of Parkinson’s disease that was developed by Mylan Laboratories in Pittsburgh and its subsidiary, Bertek Pharmaceuticals in RTP, apparently is on its way to gaining approval from the FDA.
