Hoping to capitalize on the growing demand for wireless laptops, IBM introduced expanded services for its ThinkPad line on Tuesday.

IBM’s ThinkPad R40 notebooks now feature wireless capability based on WiFi and utilizing both 802.11a and 802.11b standards for the first time.

IBM is offering improved wireless security through its “Embedded Security Subsystem” based on 802.1x authentication features, such as digital certificates with a security subsystem. The 802.11b models include Cisco Aironet.

Another new feature is inclusion of Cisco LEAP support for the 802.11a and 802.11b laptops. IBM said LEAP will help users connect securely to enterprises utilizing wireless Cisco infrastructure.

IBM also announced three new variations of its “red-button” trackball.
