Paradigm Genetics (Nasdaq: PDGM) seems to finally be emerging from a transitional period, with its new chief executive making two key appointments to complete its management team.
Heinrich Gugger, CEO of Paradigm since July, has appointed Philip R. Alfano as vice president of finance and chief financial officer. Alfano replaces Ian A.W. Howes, who resigned from the company for personal reasons in August. Paradigm has been searching for a replacement since then.
Most recently, Alfonso was senior VP and CFO of Greenwood Group, the largest Manpower franchise in the United States. Prior to that, Alfano was senior VP and CFO of Research Triangle Commerce, a commerce infrastructure company for whom he directed initial and secondary equity raises and coordinated a merger with a Nasdaq-listed company. He also served as senior VP and CFO for Winston Hotels.
Paradigm also appointed J. Barry Buzogany to the position of vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. Buzogany has more than 20 years of broad legal and management team experience, primarily in the biotech and healthcare industries.
Most recently, Buzogany was senior VP, general counsel and secretary of Gene Logic, a publicly traded genomics and bioinformatics company. Prior to that, Buzogany was executive director and corporate counsel for Centocor Inc. He also served as VP and general counsel for Boehringer Mannheim.
“I am delighted that Phil and Barry have joined our team,” Gugger said in a statement. “They each bring valuable skills to the mix…Phil is a creative and seasoned financial manager who has secured financing in very difficult markets, and Barry is an expert in structuring biotech deals and managing intellectual property. I have every confidence in the executive team now fully in place, as we swiftly work to execute our strategy.”
Gugger was previously president of Syngenta Crop Protection. He replaced John Hamer, who had served as interim CEO following the February firing of company founder and former CEO John Ryals in a dispute over the direction of the company. Hamer still serves as chief scientific officer of Paradigm, which is based in Research Triangle Park.
