The Weather Channel (TWC) and Verizon Wireless have expanded their relationship to include weather reports via the vtext.com short messaging service (SMS) companion Web site.

Through the new agreement, Verizon Wireless customers can sign up at vtext.com to receive wireless updates of current conditions and forecast information for 80,000 locations. Subscribers can customize their forecast schedule by selecting the zip code or city for which they would like to receive reports.

In addition to the weather reports from weather.com, the Web site of Atlanta-based TWC, vtext.com lets Verizon Wireless customers receive alerts on sports news, national and headline news and entertainment gossip. vtext.com, available with all digital phones, has been recently enhanced and now also lets users join chat rooms, create a customized quick-text dictionary and participate in the instant messaging phenomenon.

“We have enjoyed working with Verizon Wireless over the past two years and are excited to provide their customers with more weather resources,” Jody Fennell, vice-president of wireless business development for weather.com at TWC, said in a statement. “We are committed to providing wireless customers with reliable weather information when and where they want it, and in the format of their choice.”

Consumers can choose how many days per week they would like to receive the messages and at what time in 15-minute intervals. The weather information will be delivered in SMS format.
