WINSTON-SALEM,Salem Academy and College wasted little time in signing on for long-distance telephone service from BellSouth.
On the day BellSouth formally announced the availability of the service in North Carolina and four other states, Salem Academy and college signed on.
BellSouth cited the college as being the first long-distance customer.
The Federal Communications Commission recently gave BellSouth approval to sell long-distance in Alabama, Kentucky, South Carolina and Mississippi in the same ruling covering North Carolina. The FCC had earlier granted approval to Georgia and Louisiana. Applications are pending before the FCC to extend BellSouth’s offerings to Florida and Tennessee.
