RF Micro Devices (Nasdaq: RFMD), a provider of radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless communications applications, has named Frederick J. Leonberger as a member of its board of directors.

Leonberger is senior vice president and chief technology officer of JDS Uniphase Corporation, a supplier of optical components and modules to the communications industry. He has served in this position since the merger of Uniphase Corporation and JDS Fitel, which formed JDS Uniphase in July 1999.

Previously, Leonberger was senior VP and CTO of Uniphase, which he joined upon its acquisition of United Technologies Photonics (UTP) in 1995. He was a co-founder of UTP and served as its general manager from 1992 to 1995.

“Fred is a proven technologist with an extensive and distinguished record of achievements in the communications industry,” Dave Norbury, chief executive officer of RF Micro Devices, said in a statement. “We anticipate Fred’s technological background will serve to benefit the ongoing development of our technology roadmap and we look forward to his contributions to the board of directors.”
