Encelle Inc., a startup focused on developing treatments for chronic wounds, has landed $4 million in additional venture capital.

Intersouth Partners led the round. Other investors include the North Carolina Enterprise Fund of Raleigh and Koerner Capital in New Orleans. They were already investors in the company.

Encelle is seeking to close on an additional $2 million later this year.

The company, which has 16 employees, maintains a headquarters in Raleigh and a research and pilot production office in Greenville, NC.

Encelle also announced a partnership with Smith & Nephew, a medical device company based in the United Kingdom. Together the companies plan to the next phase of a clinical trial of Encelle’s first product. E-Matrix is being tested on patients afflicted with diabetic foot ulcers.

Encelle is developing products based on what it calls biopolymer technology which the company has patented.
