WINSTON-John Chambers, president and chief executive officer of Cisco Systems, and his wife Elaine have give $1 million to Wake Forest University in hopes of encouraging student entrepreneurs.

“Wake Forest has demonstrated that it is not only important to teach people how to learn but also to expand their ideas and communications through today’s networked world,” Chambers said. “Our goal for this fund is to provide the education, faculty support and encouragement that entrepreneurially minded students need to put their ideas to work while they are still in school.”

The donation was announced Tuesday.

Chambers’ daughter Lindsary graduated from Wake Forest in 2000 with a degree in arts. Chambers delivered the commencement address and at that time also received an honorary doctor of laws degree.

Wake Forest expects the first grants to be awarded next year.

The Chambers made the donation through the Chambers Family Charitable Trust at the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund.
