Former Sprout Group general partner Robert Curry has joined Alliance Technology Ventures as a venture partner.

Curry will be based out of Silicon Valley and will work closely with ATV Managing Partner Mike Henos to identify new investment opportunities and help build value into ATV’s existing portfolio of life sciences companies located throughout the United States, ATV says.

His hiring is the latest in a series of moves by ATV to align its management team with the firm’s current investment strategy. ATV has been actively investing on behalf of ATV III, a $150 million fund raised in 2000. Roughly 40 percent of its investments have been in the life sciences sector.

“Bob has a long and distinguished track record,” Henos said in a statement. “His ability to help developing companies grow successfully fits with our strategic approach to add value to our portfolio companies. We see his experience as a key factor in helping us achieve substantial investment returns for our investors.”

Curry joined Sprout, a venture capital affiliate of Credit Suisse First Boston, in 1991 as a general partner when the firm assumed management of two public venture capital funds originated by Merrill Lynch. He continues to work with Sprout as a consultant.

Previously, he worked for Merrill Lynch serving in various capacities with Merrill Lynch R&D Management and Merrill Lynch Venture Capital, including serving as president of both organizations in 1990-91. His previous roles included vice president of Becton Dickinson and general manager of Bio-Rad Laboratories’s Diagnostic Systems Division. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry from Purdue University.
