Bob Young, Red Hat co-founder and former chairman, has formally launched Lulu Enterprises, the parent company behind two new initiatives, Lulu Tech Circus and LuluPress.

The Lulu Tech Circus first comes to the State Fair Grounds in Raleigh from Sept. 27-29. Young says it will be a multi-ring technology road show targeted at technology enthusiasts, hobbyists, IT professionals and curiosity seekers who work and play in arenas as diverse as animation, robotics, and wireless communications. The circus will have events to be scheduled throughout North America, according to Young.

“Lulu Tech Circus can meet the needs of the `inner geek in all of us’ to get out and share experiences, advancements, and ideas,” Young, who serves as chief executive officer of Lulu, says in a statement. There are lots of technology events, but they are just too focused on the needs of the vendors and exhibitors to be much use or fun for the typical technology user. The mission of Lulu Tech Circus is to bring together the extraordinary people, innovations and concepts that define technology culture today.”

The event is divided into five rings – Artis Teka (Graphic and Media Arts), Expansive Education, Gear and Gadgets, Fun and Games and Extreme Computing.

The second component of Lulu Enterprises is Lulu Press, an
internet-based publishing platform for building collaborative,
customizable content. Lulu Press was formed when Young purchased
OpenMind Publishing Group in March. As Local Tech Wire then
reported, Lulu acquired the technology assets of OpenMind in a
combination cash-and-stock deal. As part of the purchase, Lulu
assumed the lease of OpenMind’s offices and equipment in Cary
and also offered jobs to all five employees left there.

OpenMind was founded in 2000 by Bradley Schultz and Paul Elliot as a publisher of customized electronic texts for college professors. During its brief life, it raised approximately $3.1 million in venture capital funding from Fusion Ventures, Charlotte Angel Partners, Research Triangle Ventures, the Atlantis Group, N.C. Technological Development Authority, as well as a handful of individual investors.

Lulu Press says it has designed ways to customize and package content, whether online with rich media or in a more traditional, bound book.
