Former Triangle entrepreneur Vivek Wadhwa took on Nobel-prize winning economist Robert Schiller this week as they debated whether financial industry or the technology world is more attractive to the top talent coming out of universities today.

Wadhwa, who is now vice president of innovation and research at Singularity University, minced no words in his assessment of the financial industry as he chastised Wall Street for “cooking the system.” Schiller, a Yale economist, acknowledged the need for engineers. But he said the financial industry is needed to provide resources for their innovation.

“It’s not a choice between Google and Goldman,” Schiller said.

The debate was held at the Buttonwood Gathering, which was sponsored by The Economist. Read more about the debate as reported here by The New York Times.
