UNCW’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is hosting an event that will include pitches from 12 biotech startups as well as a tour of the Marine Biotechnology Center in North Carolina.

UNCW’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship will host a breakfast event on February 26 with pitches from local businesses, panels with industry insiders and a tour of the MARBIONC (Marine Biotechnology in North Carolina) Building and NextGlass lab..

Beginning at 8:30 a.m., 12 local life science companies will have an opportunity to offer their “value proposition” pitches, which will be followed by three panels: Life Science Resources in North Carolina; How to Secure Financing; and Building Corporate Partnerships.

Panelists from across the state include John Hardin, Executive Director for the North Carolina Board of Science, Technology & Innovation; John Ujvari, SCIR Program Specialist with the North Carolina SBTDC; Mike Rhoades,Wilmington Investor Network; Joe Ruiz, Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Grant Writer; Sam Tetlow, EpiCypher and former VC with Research Triangle Ventures; and Rik Vandevenne with River Cities Capital Funds, one of North Carolina’s experienced growth equity funds with more than 100 investments in the healthcare and information technology sectors. 

The panels will be moderated by Alexander C. Dale, Ward and Smith, P.A.; Gary Hayes, COO, Managing Director of Scale Finance in Raleigh; and Deb Mosca, Marine Bio-Technologies Center of Innovation.

Scale Finance recently hosted similar events in Raleigh and Durham. The event in Wilmington reflects the region’s growing interest in the life science industry. Scale Finance was recently featured on Inc. magazine’s “Inc. 500|5000” list, which ranks the nation’s fastest growing companies.

The event will conclude with a tour of MARBIONC, the 69,000-square foot interdisciplinary research facility located on UNCW’s CREST Campus, and the NextGlass lab.
