UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School is getting into the business of online education with a remote-learning MBA program that will begin in July, the school announced.

The program will be limited to 50 students who have to meet the same entrance requirements as graduate students who come to earn the degree in Chapel Hill classrooms.

UNC is calling it MBA@UNC.

Kenan-Flagler faculty are designing the courses, which will include online class meetings and work students can do on their own schedules. Faculty will travel for three-day end-of-course meetings with groups of their students in various locales, the school said.

“High-quality teaching and learning experiences are critical to our approach, and we are ready to shatter perceptions about online education,” said Douglas Shackelford, associate dean of MBA@UNC and a tax professor.

“Technology has transformed all parts of our lives and, ultimately, it will redefine education, too,” Dean said. “We have the opportunity to rethink how we teach what our students need to know, and Kenan-Flagler has a rare opportunity to lead a transformation. We are excited to be in the vanguard of that change.”

North Carolina State University recently announced it will offer an online MBA program, too.
