Time Warner Cable, which is facing increasing competition in the Raleigh market from AT&T’s forthcoming fiber network, says it will offer faster Internet and additional entertainment “enhancements” in 2015.

Raleigh is one of seven cities targeted to deploy faster Internet. Charlotte also is on the list for what TWC calls its “TWC Maxx” service.

The Triangle has become a hot spot for faster network deployments with AT&T committed to deploying a fiber-optic network as part of the North Carolina Next Generation Network Initiative. The consortium that makes up NCNGN selected a proposal from AT&T over Time Warner Cable.

Google Fiber also is considering launching service in the Triangle.

RST Fiber, which is based in Shelby, N.C., is planning to test its service in Wake Forest and has said the Triangle will be among the first markets where it will deploy fiber.

Time Warner Cable is not promising Internet at fiber, or gigabit speeds. Rather, it says service will be “up to six times faster” or up to 300 megabits per second, about one third the speed of 1 gigabit.

The company is in the process of being acquired by Comcast in a deal that has yet to win regulatory approval.

“We are committed to reinventing the TWC service experience market-by-market, and we’re pleased to announce the expansion of our efforts to these seven key markets,” said Time Warner Cable Chairman and CEO Robert Marcus in a statement. “We want our customers to know a new experience is coming that brings them super-fast Internet speeds and a more advanced TV product. Maxx starts with a top-to-bottom network evaluation to ensure optimum performance and rock-solid network reliability, and includes a best-in-class customer experience.”

TWC upgrades are underway in Los Angeles and New York City.

In addition to faster Internet, TWC is pledging all-digital TV and more On Demand as well as DVR capabilities.

Customers will have a choice of six Internet speed capabilities “at no additional cost,” TWC said.

More business services are to be offered as well, including some fiber.
