Acer cuts PC forecast – Will Lenovo rise to No. 3 globally?

Lenovo could soon be the world’s No. 3 PC maker, not No. 4, even if it doesn’t continue recent torrid growth.

So calculates The Financial Times in London.

Acer, which is based in Taiwan and ranks No. 3 or No. 2 in total global sales based on data from research firms IDC and Gartner, cut its sales forecast Tuesday for the second time in recent weeks, The Times reported.

Based on the reduction of 10 percent, The Times estimates that Lenovo will at least catch if not pass Acer even if its sales remain flat.

However, the latest Gartner and IDC statistics showed Lenovo continues to grow with sales the last quarter up in double digits from a year ago. (Read WRAL Tech Wire’s report here.)

The reduction at Acer follows management turmoil at the company where its previous CEO resigned in a difference of opinion with the corporate board about the firm’s direction.

HP ranks No. 1 globally in sales followed by either Dell or Acer and then Lenovo in fourth place, based on Gartner and IDC data.
