Bootstrapped and debt free, Durham-based ProcessMaker already has 125 employees as it continues to generate traction in business process management solutions.

“ProcessMaker BPM addresses the need of mid-market and Fortune 2000 companies to automate key business processes and approval processes on a platform that reduces total development costs across the enterprise,” says CEO Brian Reale.

“ProcessMaker I/O addresses the need of ISVs [independent software vendors] that face competitive pressure to develop a workflow engine and add it to their stack. Workflow is not usually the core feature for enterprise software vendors.”

The Q&A:

  • What is the focus of your business?

The ProcessMaker Business Process Management Suite (BPMS) is focused on delivering process design, management, and automation tools to the mid-market and fortune 2000. Additionally, with the release of our new product, ProcessMaker I/O, the company is now focused on providing a microservices API to ISVs that want to embed workflow into their enterprise software applications.

  • What is the top pain point/business application you are seeking to address?

ProcessMaker BPM addresses the need of mid-market and fortune 2000 companies to automate key business processes and approval processes on a platform that reduces total development costs across the enterprise. ProcessMaker I/O addresses the need of ISVs that face competitive pressure to develop a workflow engine and add it to their stack. Workflow is not usually the core feature for enterprise software vendors. As a result, it is often not a feature set that they can develop and maintain well. Just as most enterprise software companies will use 3rd party APIs for sending emails, processing payments, or adding in telephony features, we believe that they should do the same when adding a workflow engine by using the ProcessMaker I/O workflow engine API.

  • What makes it unique?

ProcessMaker has just launched a new product called ProcessMaker I/O – a next generation BPMN 2.0 compliant workflow engine API offered as a cloud microservice. Most enterprise software companies discover that they need to add workflow to their software to make it more competitive and allow them to handle custom use cases from their customers. The ProcessMaker I/O workflow engine API is built to make it easier for developers and ISVs to embed a custom workflow engine into their enterprise application. Think Twilio for Workflow. The solution has SDKs in all major programming languages and is built to scale automatically to handle millions of transactions per second so that any enterprise software can now easily embed custom workflow into its applications.

  • Why should investors be interested in your firm?

Over the past three years ProcessMaker won OEM contracts to embed its BPM technology into one of the top 5 CRM vendors and 2 of the top 20 ERP vendors in the world along with a handful of DMS/ECM vendors. Based on what we learned during these engagements, we decided to build and release ProcessMaker I/O – a lean bpmn 2.0 workflow engine API specifically designed for developers building enterprise applications.

The Enterprise Application market is a $280 billion a year market and there is no company with a solution as well tailored to this market as ProcessMaker I/O. We have SDKs in all major languages, an API that can scale to handle millions of transactions per second, an always on infrastructure layer, and friendly developer documentation.

  • How are you financed at this point?

ProcessMaker was started with $125,000 from the original founders and family members. The business is debt free and has financed itself organically ever since by running a business that is very cash efficient and profitable. We make hard decisions with the business and always strive for profitable growth.
