Shoeboxed, a fast-growing startup in Durham focused on expense management and receipt tracking, is moving its headquarters this week to the American Underground @ Main.
Shoeboxed is one of the anchors for the recently expanded Underground complex. The Underground offers co-working space and resources as well as other services.
The move is not just about space, either, since it will be occupying less space (2,000 square feet total) than at its previous location.
So why the move?
Shoeboxed management is seeking more access to entrepreneurial resources as well as stepping up efforts at collaboration with other startups.
“We value the startup ecosystem that American Underground has created and we want to be a big part of it,” said
Shoeboxed CEO Taylor Mingos. “There’s such an intense entrepreneurial spirit and sense of camaraderie [at American
Underground], and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work in a community filled with so much drive and diversity.”
Google for Entrepreneurs also supports the Underground, which operates two locations in Durham and another in Raleigh.
Shoeboxed managed stressed that nearly a third of Underground-based firms are female- or minority-led. Also, 65 percent of the tenants offer mentoring.
Shoeboxed, which now has 50 employees, will also occupy 4,300 square feet of space at the Diamond View building, which is part of the American Tobacco Historic District. The operations team will occupy that space.
The Underground now houses more than 200 companies.
Shoeboxed launched in 2007. It also has an office in Sydney, Australia.
