Time Warner Cable is providing a summer science camp program free of charge to more than 750 Durham area students.
The Minds On! Summer Science Program theme for 2013 is “Weather Wonderland.” Campers will explore hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, snow and rain. Each day they’ll examine why these weather systems occur and how we learn about them through experiments, activities and stories.
Camp sessions are available for children ages 10-13 and will be hosted by the Durham Public Schools Department of Community Education and Durham County 4-H. Among other locations, camps will be held at Oak Grove Elementary, Eno Valley Elementary, Southwest Elementary, Hope Valley Elementary, Merritt Moore Elementary and Neal Middle School. The camps―a combination of weeklong and single-day camps―began June 17 and will run through August 9.
The Minds On! Summer Science Program was developed in partnership with the the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in Chapel Hill. Funding comes from Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds program, a five-year, $100 million philanthropic initiative to connect youth to ideas, people and opportunities that will inspire them to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This is the third year Time Warner Cable has partnered with Morehead to present the summer science camp series.
