Sustainability is a growing business imperative at SAS as shown clearly in two examples this week: Its latest sustainability report, which documents everything from power to trash savings to a new smart campus initiative unveiled on Monday.

“Focusing on the Earth’s resources has long been a priority for us,” SAS co-founder and CEO Jim Goodnight says in a column included in the report.

“Multiyear programs advancing energy conservation, solar projects, emission management, pollution mitigation, water conservation, waste reduction and recycling, procurement and green building continue to reduce SAS’ environmental footprint. In just the past decade, SAS has improved energy efficiency in our office buildings a full 28 percent; diverted more than 50 percent of waste away from landfills, and generated more than 3.8 million kilowatt-hours annually of clean, renewable energy from our nine solar installations.”

And to put this all into perspective, take a look at its online, interactive report.

A SAS spokesperson calls the 60-plus page “beautiful.”

How much paper does SAS save by publishing electronically? PDFs have been around for a long time, of course, but the interactive report may save a lot of paper being used by others who hit “print” for a hard copy.

As for its latest efforts, SAS says in the report that the Cary-based analytics software giant:

  • Minimized energy consumption and emissions: Energy consumption decreased by .1 percent despite adding more than 190,000 square feet of office space globally (a 4.4 percent increase). SAS data centers decreased consumption by 3.9 percent despite adding almost 2,000 additional servers.
  • Solar investment payoff: In 2016 alone, SAS generated 3.8 million kilowatt hours of clean, renewably sourced energy from rooftop and ground-mounted solar systems. Since 2008, when SAS broke the solar energy one megawatt barrier for the Southeast, the solar capacity in North Carolina has grown to rank No. 2 nationally.
  • Waste reduction: SAS diverted 62.6 percent of operational and construction waste from landfills globally.
  • Green building practices: Initiated LEED certification for SAS’ largest office building and data center.
