SAS, the world’s largest privately owned software company, makes Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” in the U.S. once more. But the Cary firm fell two spots to No. 4 in the newest rankings.
Kimley-Horn and Associates in Cary is the only other North Carolina firm to crack the list, coming in at No. 25.
SAS claimed the top spot in 2010 and 2011. In 2014, SAS finished fourth and has been ranked 18 times.
Google topped the rankings, which were released Thursday. Boston Consulting Group ranks No. 2, and ACUITY is No. 3.

“Remaining on this list of best workplaces is especially meaningful because it is so heavily based on employee feedback,” said Jenn Mann, SAS Vice President of Human Resources, in a statement. “Our leadership cares about our people and the work they do. We are all passionate about this place, and having such amazing people at SAS creates an employee experience that you can’t find anywhere else.”
The organization Great Place to Work compiles the survey, based in part on a 58-question survey of employees.
SAS co-founder and CEO Jim Goodnight takes great pride in the workplace atmosphere, calling employees the company’s most important asset.
“Everyone plays a role in making SAS a great place to work – and work with. That’s why it is so important that we attract, retain and develop the best talent to remain successful,” Goodnight said in a statement about the latest survey.
SAS, which reported record revenues of just more than $3 billion in 2014, reported an employee turnover rate of 5 percent, which it says is far below the software industry average of 16 percent.
