SAS, the world’s largest privately held software company which calls Cary its home base, topped $3 billion in revenue for the first time in 2013.

A 5 percent increase in revenues also ensured that SAS stretched its streak of consecutive years for record growth to 38. The streak dates to the founding of the firm.

SAS normally does not disclose financials but does issue an annual report about revenue growth and product performance. Driving growth was demand for SAS data analytics and business intelligence products and services which help companies and enterprises better understand then capitalize on the growing mountains of digital data.

The news was reported early Thursday.

“Data is an asset of growing importance to organizations,” said SAS CEO Jim Goodnight. “The amount of data pouring in is so vast, it’s impossible to analyze quickly enough to make a difference in day-to-day decisions without a high-performance analytics infrastructure. Over the last two years we’ve delivered ground-breaking analytics technology that unlocks the value in all this data.”

SAS also continues to growth its work force both locally and internationally.

Senior Vice President Jim Davis told WRALTechWire that employee headcount in Cary grew 1 percent in 2013 to 5,160. And the company continues to hire.

“We’ve added 38 positions just this month,” Davis said. “I certainly expect us to continue to grow.”

In the U.S., SAS employs 6,716, a growth rate of 1.6 percent last year.

Overall, SAS grew to 13,764 workers worldwide, an increase of 3.5 percent.

Davis said the employment totals reflect continuing efforts by SAS to grow revenues overseas, particularly in Europe.
