Remember the original destruction of the Death Star in Star Wars – and the even more impressive special effects in the updated version from George Lucas? Think that clarity and response could be improved upon on the screen of your smartphone? The answer is yes. Cary’s Epic Games is delivering that experience.

Just check out a new released video from Epic that wowed a global audience on Monday.

It’s called “ProtoStar,” a stunning 3 minute, 28 second demonstration of just what Epic designers and engineers can produce not just on large screen 3D 4K Tvs but on that device you put in your hand. (Epic also is bringing to market its own new gaming title called “Paragon.” Its demos are pretty impressive as well.)

“This scene has been rendered in real time using the Unreal Engine,” Epic founder and CEO Tim Sweeney said from the stage at the World Mobile Congress in Spain, according to DualShockers.com.

“It’s running live, and the operator, is right here in the audience. Thanks to the new Vulkan API, we can render objects four times faster than in OpenGL, enabling high-end graphics with low power consumption.

“Now this is a simulation of celestial mechanics. Meteors are colliding and coalescing enhanced by particle systems, emissive materials, dynamic shaders, and other physically based rendering effects. Features that were once only possible on a high end game console now run on a device that fits in your pocket.”

Amazing, eh?

As wireless networks gain more speed and with the promise of even faster 5G, device makers are touting more than ever their mobile devices as prime game-playing platforms. And Epic remains at the forefront of mobile development as Samsung shows at the World Mobile Congress.

Just as Apple in the past has put Epic executives on the stage to promote mobile gaming technology, so now has Samsung. Sweeney did the honors for the privately held company.

“Samsung brought Epic Games graphics guru Tim Sweeney on stage to give a quick demonstration of an Unreal Engine tech demo that uses the Vulkan API,” PcWorld reports from Barcelona. “It’s pretty impressive stuff for a smartphone, showing far more objects and higher fidelity than would be possible with OpenGL.”

Vulkan is a new graphics API, and Samsung says it’s the first to put it on mobile devices.

Epic’s global-selling, cross-platform Unreal game engine continues to be a trend-setter in the gaming industry for delivering life-like graphics at incredible speeds.

The ProtoStar includes explanatory comments from Epic developers Wyeth Johnson and Nick Smedberg.
