RTI International’s new annual report is out – and 2016 goes in the books as another year of growth.

Major growth, in fact.

The Triangle-based independent, nonprofit research institute grew its employee headcount by some 15 percent and also increased revenues by almost 7 percent, according to data included in the 2016 report titled “Impact” which was just published.

RTI, which recently made two acquisitions and looks to make more in 2017 as part of an effort to broaden its research resources as well as geographical footprint, reports that revenues increased to $885 million from $831.5 million in 2015. Revenues were $788 million for fiscal year 2014.

Its work force, meanwhile, grew at an even faster clip, hitting 4.723, the report says. That’s up from 4,150 in 2015.

The recently announced deals have already pushed RTI’s employee total to more than 5,000.

And RTI continues to hire, with numerous positions available in the Triangle as well as other locations.

But its work is hardly finished, as CEO Wayne Holden wrote in the report.

“The challenges before us – critical national and global goals such as fostering economic growth through innovation, transforming health care, and closing gaps in food security – often seem entrenched,” he wrote, “but our experts made impactful strides toward solutions that are making the world a better place.”

RTI, which launched as Research Triangle Institute in 1958 as one of RTP’s first major institutions, has grown to 12 U.S. offices with a new one being added in Colorado. Another 10 are located overseas.

The report also notes how diverse and international RTI’s work force is.

First, geographically.

RTI has more than 3,000 employees in the U.S. Another 754 work in Africa, 703 in Asia. 101 in Latin and Central America. 52 in the Middle East and 75 in Europe as well as two in Australia.

The work force includes 105 nationalities who speak a collective total of 90 languages and holds degrees across 250 fields.

Clean energy and water, food production and safety, and fighting disease such as Zika were some of the focal points for RTI’s researchers last year. Education, economic development and social policy also are other major points of emphasis.

RTI has contracts with more than 1,000 clients.

Three recently announced projects highlight RTI’s diverse scope of missions:

  • Are schools prepared for school shootings? RTI International launches nationwide study
  • RTI International to lead two national human trafficking program evaluations
  • Online identity verification for Michigan’s public assistance programs improves efficiency, speeds access to benefits
