Google Motorola Mobility, which is being bought by Lenovo for $2.9 billion, is nearing launch of a whale-sized smartphone/tablet combo nicknamed “Shamu,” says news website 9to5 Google.

The3 phone’s actual name is Nexus 6.

The device ” has long been rumored,” writes Stephen Hall, but now he has specific information.

“We can now corroborate previous rumors that its screen size nudges it out of smartphone territory, and closer to the likes of the recent push for phablet devices,” he says.

“If any smartphone is really a phablet, this is it—shipping with a behemoth screen that’s a massive 5.92-inches diagonally, with the device’s body being just a bit larger than that.”

At 5.92 inches, Shamu would be larger than Apple’s new iPhone 6 Plus at 5.5 inches.

But there’s much more to Shamu than size.

  • It packs a 2k display compared to Apple’s 1080p (pixel) display.
  • A high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon process
  • A 13-megapixel camera.

According to Hall, a formal announcement is due in October with sales to begin in November.

The Lenovo-Google deal has yet to receive government approval.

Both companies have continued to roll out new smartphone and related products ahead of the deal closing.
