Microsoft, which has a large software-related operation in Charlotte, is planning its “biggest round of job cuts in five years,” reports Bloomberg news.
The restructuring could be the biggest in the company’s history.
Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is looking to slim down in the wake of its Nokia Oyj phone handset unit, which added some 30,000 workers. The cuts have been expected as part of a cost reduction plan, Bloomberg says.
In 2009, Microsoft slashed 5,800 jobs – the previous largest number of cuts, according to Bloomberg.
The layoffs could be disclosed later this week, Bloomberg noted.
Just last week, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella wrote a memo of more than 3,000 words that spelled out to employees his company mission statement. Nadella replaced Steve Ballmer in February.
Microsoft declined comment when asked about the layoffs by Bloomberg.
The company has some 127,000 employees.
