CenturyLink, a provider of communications and high-speed Internet services in parts of the Triangle as well as much of eastern North Carolina, could be merging.

“CenturyLink in Advanced Talks to Merge With Level 3 Communications,” according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

“A deal could be announced in the coming weeks, people familiar with the matter say,” the paper adds.

The story noted that “a deal that would give the telecommunications companies greater heft in a brutally competitive industry.”

CenturyLink services areas long held by Sprint, which ultimately sold its landline operations to become a cellular provider.

The company launched its own high-speed Internet service in parts of the region last year.

CenturyLink, AT&T and Frontier Communications are also among the communication firms that have accepted millions in federal funding to expand broadband access to underserved areas.
