Quintiles, the world’s largest provider of life science industry services with some 29,000 employees, is growing a bit bigger but adding more expertise in healthcare analytics through the acquisition of Encore Health Resources.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but Quintiles (NYSE: Q) said the deal is not expected to have a “material impact” on its earnings.

The deal was announced early Monday.

Encore, which is based in Houston, has some 300 employees, including approximately 250 consultants who operate across North America.

WRAL TechWire goes inside the deal: In a Q&A, a Quintiles executive discusses what the deal adds to the company.

“Biopharmaceutical companies are increasingly interested in the ‘real-world’ outcomes associated with their medicines to enable optimal market access,” a spokesperson for Quintiles says. “Encore’s expertise with hospitals and hospital information will help Quintiles extend its service offerings meaningfully for biopharmaceutical companies.

“Encore also has an emerging line of business focused on services and solutions directed toward the analysis of healthcare provider clinical data, including managed service offerings for eMeasures and value-based components of payer contracts. An industry-experienced team, approximately 70% of Encore’s employees are clinicians and/or have advanced degrees.”

Quintiles says the deal forms the foundation for an expanded suite of analytics-related services.

Encore, a five-year-old firm, focuses on electronic health record-related implementation and advisory services.

“Today’s announcement signifies the increasing importance of leveraging EHR and real-world information to inform our customers and improve their probability of success,” said Tom Pike, chief executive officer at Quintiles. “Encore has significant EHR expertise, strong relationships with many large U.S. provider networks and academic medical centers as well as experienced consultants, proven tools, and methodologies. It will be a key strategic addition for our business that will extend our services suite and allow us to work with Encore to strengthen its provider-focused solutions.”
