There is now an easier way to make it through customs at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
Airport officials say a new mobile app will help speed up the process for the 400 to 600 people who enter the United States at RDU each day.
Airport spokesperson Andrew Sawyer said the new nonstop flight to Paris on Delta Airlines increased the strain on officers.
“That (flight) put an extra strain on the physical officers that were here for the customs and border patrol,” he said.
The app, called the “Mobile Passport”, will replace the customs declaration card. RDU is the 15th U.S. airport to implement the technology.
“You’ll put in information. You’ll put in your passport details and you’ll take a selfie to have a picture stored inj the app,” Sawyer said.
Once the passenger lands and has cell service, they can submit their information.
“It is kind of like a fast pass to the front of the line,” Sawyer said. “Everything is already pre-approved automatically.”
And officials say the app is secure.
“It is a demonstration of how we are growing and how we are growing across the board,” he said.
The app is only available to U.S. and Canadian citizens.
RDU has direct flights to London, Paris and Cancun.
