John Killebrew is retiring as a vice president at MCNC, which is expanding the N.C. Research and Education Network across the state.

In other management changes, MCNC names a chief operating officer and promotes other executives.

Tommy Jacobson assumes the COO post, a newly created position. He has worked at MCNC for 19 years. The N.C. State graduate started at MCNC as a technical support intern.

Killebrew, who joined MCNC after a long career at Bell South in which he promoted adoption of the Internet by the company and by businesses, served as MCNC;s vice presidentn of NCREN Community Support.

“John has contributed so much to the NCREN community the last 12 years,” said MCNC Chief Executive Officer Joe Freddoso. “John has been the key executive in helping build cohesive, transparent, and trusted relationships between MCNC and the members of the NCREN Community, and we will greatly miss him.”

MCNC is in the midst of upgrading NCREN to an all-fiber backbone across the state as part of a $144 million project that is supported by the Golden LEAF development group and with federal funding support.

Jacobson will have responsibility for network operations, service deliver and support.

In other changes:

  • Todd Broucksou was promoted to Senior Director of Constituent Support and System Operations.He had been director of operations.
  • David Warden is now Senior Director of Fiber Business Development and Plant Management.
  • Jeremy Buenviaje is Senior Manager of Network Operations and Customer Fulfillment.
  • Matt Valenzisi is Chief Architect and NCREN Senior Technical Manager of Network Management.
  • Ray Suitte is  Senior Technical Manager of Core Engineering and Network Deployment.
  • Peter Valentine is Director of Facilities Engineering and Video Engineering/Operations.
