The Triangle’s growing gaming scene has a new player – and it’s looking for ideas..

Gaming publisher and developer Relevant Games has launched in Durham, led by industry veterans from Epic Games, Insomniac Games, Ubisoft, EA, CDV Software and Westwood Studios.

Relevant Games is focused on building and publishing games that for the mobile games market for iOS and Android devices. Relevant is a joint venture between media companies EW Scripps and Capitol Broadcasting; Capitol Broadcasting is the parent company of WRALTechWire.

“We build and publish games that entertain and enlighten players about real world topics through fun and exciting gameplay experiences,” the company says.

Relevant is led by Studio Director Joshua Mills, whose North Carolina career includes posts with Epic Games, Red Storm Entertainment, Funcom, and Insomniac Games.

The company also is looking for ideas.

“We’re actively looking for passionate developers with original concepts and products to closely team up with in the future.,” Mills wrote in an announcement about the firm’s launch. “We believe that the developer is the artist, and we want to help support and foster their creativity and vision by working closely together through development to make those efforts a success in the very competitive field of mobile gaming.

The company’s first project is currently in development with Hazard Studios under the creative guidance of Relevant Games’ new Senior Creative Director Randy Greenback and the art direction of Donovan Valdes.

Joshua Mills: “Josh started his career in the interactive entertainment industry with Red Storm Entertainment in quality assurance. He has been a part of creating some of the most successful franchises in gaming including Ratchet & Clank, Rainbow Six, and Unreal Tournament. He’s spent his career in North Carolina with companies Epic Games, Red Storm Entertainment, Funcom, and Insomniac Games. He loves doing improv, making short film, and acting a fool.”

Randy Greenback: ”Randy has over 18 years of professional experience in video game development, across PC, consoles, mobile and handhelds. He’s a hands-on designer and creative leader who has contributed to major franchises including Command & Conquer, Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, America’s Army, Rachet & Clank, Breach & Clear, etc. He has worked for several game studios and publishers including Westwood Studios, Red Storm Entertainment, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts and Insomniac Games. He’s a proud father of 3, a retro game collector, trivia master, dev mentor and is a staunch proponent of games for good.”

Michael Tata, head of publishing: “Michael has enjoyed success as a Production Consultant for developers across the globe, helping develop and publish titles on PC, consoles, mobile, and handhelds. Michael got his start in the industry at video games publisher CDV Software Entertainment. During his time with CDV Software, he oversaw the release of the company’s first AAA multi-platform title, Sacred 2 Fallen Angel. In addition to Sacred 2, Michael was responsible for the release of over ten titles spanning every major platform. Michael has been an avid gamer since the first Nintendo Entertainment System was found under the family Christmas tree when he was a kid.”

 Scripps and Capitol also partnered to launch FiveOneNine Games in 2011.
