3D technologies company 3D Systems (NYSE:DDD) is building out its portfolio and global footprint with the acquisition of France-based Phenix Systems.

Rock Hill, S.C.-based 3D Systems paid $15.1 million to acquire 81 percent of Phenix. 3D Systems said it will immediately launch a simplified take-over bid process with the French markets Authority for the remaining shares and voting rights.

3D Systems is the company that earlier this year acquired Geomagic for $55 million cash. The Morrisville company has developed 3D software used in a variety of applications. Phenix, based in Riom, France, designs and makes proprietary metal 3D printers that print metal and ceramic parts from very fine powders. The metal parts can be used in aerospace, automotive and medical device applications.

In a statement, 3D Systems CEO Avi Reichental said that the acquisition strengthens its own offerings and puts the company at the center of rapidly growing manufacturing opportunities.
