Arrow International, which is part of Teleflex, is scaling back production at its facility in Asheboro over the next two years, Asheboro’s mayor disclosed Thursday.

Jobs are being moved to Mexico, the company says.

Hundreds are jobs will be lost, according to Mayor David Smith, who said the company told him about the scaling back of operations.

Some 635 people currently work at Arrow, where devices such as catheters and surgical kits are made.

The company is undergoing a “global restructuring,” it said.

Most of the jobs are expected to be lost by 2015.

The company has operated in Asheboro for more than 60 years. Teleflex acquired the plant in 2007.

“We deeply regret this decision and the impact it will have on the lives of employees and their families,” Smith said in the press release cited by media reports. “That is our primary concern. It’s a big loss for our community. We know that these workers are highly skilled and hard working and they will be a great addition to any employer. We stand ready to support them and to work with local company officials through the next three years of transition.”

The plant covers more than 200,000 square feet.

Of the workers, 470 are full-time and 165 are contractors, according to the Triad Business Journal.

The newspaper reported that as recently as 2010 Teleflex was expanding the Asheboro work force from 550 to more than 700.

Teleflex is based near Philadelphia, Pa.
