Dr. Anthony Atala changes and improves lives based on his research.
A recent recipient of North Carolina’s top civilian award in science, Dr. Atala is a global leader in regenerative medicine, currently serving as director of the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine. Atala’s research team was the first to develop materials for the regeneration of internal organs and has experimentally printed others with 3-D printers.
Dr. Atala will be a featured speaker on Friday, Nov. 13, during NCREN Community Day 2015 hosted by MCNC at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem.
His session Regenerative Medicine: New Approaches to Health Care will focus on regenerative medicine being a viable alternative to organ transplants in light of the diminishing donations due to aging patients. In addition, Dr. Atala also will discuss recent advances in regenerative medicine, the possible ground-breaking techniques that could benefit patients, and the important role of new technologies in his work.
MCNC continues to be a leader in health care connectivity in North Carolina. The North Carolina Research and Education (NCREN) serves as the state’s broadband foundation for transforming the delivery of health care needs to researchers, practitioners, and citizens throughout the state. The non-profit operator of NCREN based in Research Triangle Park supports health care innovation via the North Carolina Telehealth Network (NCTN), which allows those in the medical field to remain steadfast in their work using high-bandwidth, low-latency broadband connections.
Dr. Atala is a fitting highlight to MCNC’s program this year as his success is one that certainly fits the event theme of Create the Future. Among his many accolades and awards, he was recognized by Time Magazine in 2013 for one of five discoveries that will change the future of medical transplants.
NCREN Community Day is an annual event that provides a valuable opportunity to engage with influential North Carolina community leaders and network with constituents and peers from around the country. Top education, government, and technology executives are set to participate in Dr. Atala’s presentation as well as in many other discussions spanning two days on innovation and entrepreneurship, leadership, STEM education, massive open online courses (MOOCs), public safety, and privacy and information governance. MCNC also will announce the 2015 Community Choice Award winner in addition to other individual awards for distinguished service with the Robyn Render Endeavor Award and the Empower Award.
