MCNC will host Broadband for the Future today (Monday, Aug. 12) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. from four locations in North Carolina.
This event will celebrate the completion of the $144 million Golden LEAF Rural Broadband Initiative, building upon a vision to create an abundance of bandwidth in North Carolina via the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN). More than 300 people statewide are expected to attend today’s event.
This observation will be held simultaneously from four locations at the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, UNC Charlotte, Elizabeth City State University, and the MCNC campus in Research Triangle Park.

MCNC has spent the last three years expanding the state’s only open-access middle-mile broadband infrastructure to enable private-sector Internet Service Providers and other community institutions to access the affordable broadband connectivity needed to succeed in today’s world.
North Carolina is one of just a handful of states with this level of competitive advantage in research, health care and education; and the newly-expanded NCREN is a real asset to help grow North Carolina’s new broadband economy.
