Jean Davis, a senior executive at the North Carolina Department of Commerce, is the new chief executive officer at MCNC. She will take over the organization that operates the statewide North Carolina Research and Education Network on Nov. 17.

MCNC announced her selection Wednesday afternoon at its annual NCREN Community Day conference in Raleigh.

Davis is the eighth CEO of MCNC, which dates back to 1983 and is a non-profit. She also is the first woman to hold the role on a permanent basis.

Pat Moody is serving currently as interim CEO. She also is MCNC’s chief financial officer.

Joe Freddoso stepped down earlier this year after directing the completion of NCREN’s all-fiber optic backbone as part of a more than $120 million expansion project.

“The history of MCNC is truly one of innovative firsts, and we were very fortunate that MCNC’s successful history could attract the caliber of a person like Jean who is highly knowledgeable about North Carolina’s education, business and governmental environment with a deep-seated track record of success and experience in leadership positions,” said Tom Rabon, chairman of the MCNC Board of Directors, in announcing the hire. “On behalf of the MCNC Board of Directors and the search committee, I’m excited that she has accepted this position to usher in a new era for the organization.”

Davis currently is chief operating officer and executive director of business, industry and trade at the Department of Commerce.

“MCNC has a rich history of innovation in North Carolina, and I’m excited for the opportunity to build upon that path of success for the next phase of MCNC’s growth,” Davis said in a statement. “Technology changes daily, and by working in collaboration with the NCREN Community, staff, private-sector partners and others, we can create new opportunities that will keep North Carolina as a leader in broadband connectivity.”
