BioMerieux is set to receive a $220,000 state grant if it adds 44 jobs over three years in a $48.3 million expansion of its Durham manufacturing facility.

The international life science diagnostics manufacturer already employs more than 630 people at that location.

BioMerieux is based in France, but most of its $2 billion in sales comes from other markets.

The One North Carolina Fund grant is contingent upon the company hitting new job targets and also local partners matching the state grant total.

BioMerieux provides various reagents, instruments and software.

On 2006, BioMerieux shut a production line at the plant and laid off some 80 workers. It employed 570 people in Durham at that time.

“BioMérieux has a long and treasured history with North Carolina, its skilled and educated workforce has enabled us to become a leading innovator and supplier of diagnostic equipment,” said Marc Mackowiak, president and chief executive officer of bioMérieux. “I applaud the One North Carolina Fund, it is a forward thinking initiative that will drive infrastructure and economic development in our state.”

Local partners include N.C. Community Colleges, Durham County, N. C. Biotech Center and the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce.
