LenovoEMC servers are officially on sale,

The world’s No. 2 PC manufacturer and one of the world’s top storage device makers closed on their joint venture in January. As of Monday, their products hit the street.

Lenovo reportedly was interested in acquiring a portion of IBM’s server business, but those talks broke down, according to sources for Bloomberg news.

The new LenovoEMC servers are among efforts by Lenovo to expand beyond the PC business.

Lenovo channel partners and Lenovo’s own website offer the products.

The servers include Lenovo Iomega and LenovoEMC brands.

“The Lenovo Iomega ix Series Desktop, LenovoEMC px Series Desktop and px Series rack mount families combine Lenovo and EMC leadership into backup, shared virtualization and disaster recovery storage solutions that complement Lenovo’s ThinkServer line,” said Kevin Nelson, executive director of Enterprise for Lenovo North America. “Lenovo is providing server and storage solutions with leading performance, true openness and value that today’s organizations are seeking.”

Lenovo holds a majority interest in the venture.

Lenovo is battling HP for the ranking as the world’s No. 1 PC manufacturer. EMC is one of the world’s top manufacturers of servers and related storage devices as well as services.

The joint venture includes what Lenovo called “core assets” of EMC’s Iomega business.

EMC operates manufacturing as well as research and development offices in the Triangle area.

Lenovo operates its executive headquarters in Morrisville with most operations based in China, where the company was launched.

The two firms also have a partnership involving x86 server development plus rerseller and original equipment manufacturing agreements for EMC storage products.
