North Carolina’s economy is getting a boost from three different companies with a mix of high-tech positions included.
Here’s a recap of three recent announcements:
- Chemical company adding 200 jobs
A specialty chemical company plans to expand in North Carolina and create 200 jobs over five years.
Gov. Roy Cooper’s administration announced Monday that Albemarle Corp. expects to invest more than $10 million over five years on an expansion in Cleveland County that will add 170 jobs through 2022. The company also expects to add 30 jobs at its headquarters in Charlotte.
The company already employs 150 people in Kings Mountain and 130 in Charlotte.
Average salaries for the Cleveland County positions will be over $78,000, more than double the county average.
A state panel agreed Monday to give Albemarle $4.3 million over 12 years if the company meets job-creation and investment goals. Albemarle makes chemicals used to create products manufactured by pharmaceutical and electronics companies, among others.
- Revlon adding jobs in Oxford
Global cosmetics and beauty care products company Revlon will expand operations at its existing facility near Oxford, creating 55 full-time jobs over three years, Cooper announced last week. The company will invest $16.1 million to add production capacity for its Elizabeth Arden line of products.
“Our Revlon and Elizabeth Arden brands are growing globally and the plant expansion in Oxford will enable us to in-source production of fragrances and Elizabeth Arden skincare and color cosmetics to meet increased consumer demand,” said Alan Blake, Revlon Chief Supply Chain Officer. “We are committed to the state of North Carolina and pleased to be making a significant economic investment at our largest manufacturing plant in the world.”
Salaries for the new jobs will vary by position but will average $37,679, in line with Granville County’s average wage, the Department of Commerce said.
Revlon will receive a performance-based grant of $100,000 from the One North Carolina Fund.
- Allstate adding tech jobs in big announcement
Allstate Insurance Co. announced last Wednesday plans to more than double its NCworkforce by expanding in the Charlotte area, investing more than $22 million and creating 2,250 new jobs by 2020.
Among those positions will be information technology jobs, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Allstate listed a wide range of jobs to be filled, but a company official said they were still working on specifics.
“We’re still putting the final touches on them,’ said Harriet Harty, Allstate executive vice president for human resources. “But it will be a combination of new jobs, as well as what I would say current employees, so we’re still putting the final touches on what those actual jobs are going to be. Let’s just say there’s no shortage of possibilities.”
Harty said the company is looking at the talent market to see which are the best jobs to be located in Charlotte and making decisions accordingly. She also said the company will build a new office to handle the expansion, although she also suggested some of the new jobs would be located in its current site on the city’s north side.
Allstate already has a large call center in Charlotte. A state Department of Commerce document says Allstate chose the region for its expansion over places like Phoenix, Denver, Philadelphia and suburban Dallas. The document says Allstate will hire for a range of disciplines, including claims and actuarial services, product underwriting and customer service.
The expansion comes with potentially up to $23 million in local and state incentives. The company must meet job-creation, wage and investment requirements to receive the largest chunk of the incentives.
