The layoffs began in North America last week, but talk about job cuts has been circulating since April.

As the Alliance has reported through its contacts with unions around the world, IBM is making job cuts in many countries although no reports of layoffs have surfaced in either India or China. India is where IBM employs the biggest number of employees, based on media reports.

In Australia, IBM hasn’t formally announced cuts but media reports say as many as 1,500 employees will lose their jobs – many of which are being off-shored elsewhere in Asia or to New Zealand.

“IBM Australia is in the midst of axing up to 1500 Australian staff in a reshuffle that will send many jobs offshore to Asia and New Zealand, according to sources,” reported Thd Australian.

“[B]etween 1200 and 1500 local jobs are being made redundant this year in several waves,” the newspaper said.
