Job seekers in information technology received “unexpected” and unwelcome news in October: The number of available positions fell for the fourth consecutive month, and that was a surprise, says the latest North Carolina IT Job Trends report from the North Carolina Technology Association.

The daily average of advertised job listings fell 11 percent from September to 3,320, according to data analyzed by talent management firm SkillProof.

The drop also is 10 percent from a year ago.

The report noted, however, that the news was “unexpected” since “many job markets swing up during the fall.”

North Carolina’s labor market also was much worse than the national numbers where openings declined – but ny 3.9 percent.

And what’s the outlook going forward?

Glum.

“All sectors contributed to the decline in October without any sector standing out,” the report says. “It seems that there was much consensus among employers about their current position and direction.”

Compared to a year ago, openings fell sharply for systems engineers, software development, and IT architects/consultants.

There were some bright spots, however.

Demand for IT management, hardware engineering and business process/design were all up.
