Jim Goodnight, 71, co-founder and chief executive officer of SAS software in Cary, is No. 60 on the latest list of the richest people in America with a fortune worth $7.7 billion, according to Forbes.

John Sall, 66, who co-founded SAS with Goodnight, ranks No. 133 at $3.8 billion.

Forbes published the latest list Monday morning.

The only other North Carolinian on the list is Charlotte’s Clemmie Spangler, Jr. He ranks No. 272 at $2.3 billion.

David Murdoch, the 91-year-old billionaire who founded the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis and has a residence there, ranked No. 211 at $3 billion.

Goodnight’s fortune is up $500 million from a year ago, but his ranking dropped two spots, reflecting the overall growth of the Forbes’ powerful. In 2012, Forbesa valued Goodnight’s net worth at $7.3 billion.

The latest figures show a slight improvement for Goodnight’s wealth from earlier this year.

Goodnight ranks No. 177 on the Forbes global richest list in March at $7.5 billion.

That was a drop of 23 spots from 2013’s ranking when Forbes estimated his net worth at $7.7 billion.

The dip in Goodnight’s fortune still left him in a far better position than 2009 when the recession helped reduce his net worth to $6.1 billion, based on Forbes’ figure.

Sall comes in at No. 408 on tha March list at $3.7 billion, so his net worth is up as well.

His fortune had dipped from $3.8 billion in 2013 when he was ranked No. 353 on the global list.

In 2009, Sall’s fortune totalled $3.1 billion, according to Forbes.

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, topped the richest list for the 21st consecutive year with a net worth of $81 billion. That’s up $9 billion from a year ago, according to Forbes.

Warren Buffett is No. 2 at $67 billion followed by Larry Ellison of Oracle at $50 billion.

The fortunes of the top 400 increased to $2.29 trillion from $2.02 trillion.
