New Lenovo  devices unveiled this week at the IFA consumer electronics show in Germany see a strategic shift in how the company is looking to transform their offerings to fit the board room, the game room and everywhere between with more consumers now on the go.

The world’s largest PC maker is also the fourth largest supplier of smartphones – selling more smartphones now than PCs.

As Lenovo continues to push the envelope in mobile solutions, and for that matter the global market share in smartphones, the company revealed two new premium VIBE phones on Thursday with what the company claims has advanced cameras for “selfie beautification” that is “fashionably optimized” for individual self-expression. (Lenovo unveiled other new models earlier this week, too. WRAL TechWire has the details.)

Here are the latest additions to its VIBE line of premium smartphones: the VIBE X2 and VIBE Z2.

• VIBE X2

The VIBE X2 is the world’s first layered smartphone and comes with new VIBE Xtension accessories with multilayered design and click-on accessories. The device has its signature, gradient three layer design and is available in four colors – white, red, gold and dark grey. As the first global handset manufacturer to use the new MediaTEK MT6595 4G LTE True8Core processor, Lenovo has designed the VIBE X2 for impressive performance. This processor delivers a hidden layer with power-saving features that help boost battery life while users are able to keep videos, games and photos running longer. It also has a 5-inch FHD resolution display with wide-angle viewing.

The VIBE X2 comes with two advanced cameras equipped with multiple shooting modes and beautification features. Users can take effortless selfies with the VIBE X2’s 5 megapixel front camera featuring auto-shutter gesture. The 13-megapixel auto-focus, rear-facing camera comes with a back-illuminated sensor and LED flash. And with 32 GB of internal storage, users should have ample room to store their digital content. Lenovo also introduced two new click-on accessories, known as VIBE Xtensions, to include the VIBE X2 Battery and VIBE X2 Speaker. “The VIBE X2 offers consumers a smartphone that’s as unique as they are, starting with its three-layer color gradient design that looks as beautiful as it feels in the hand,” said Colin Giles, senior vice president of worldwide sales Lenovo’s Mobile Business Group.

• VIBE Z2

The VIBE Z2 self-proclaims the “selfie” crown as Lenovo’s first 64-bit smartphone with a super high-resolution camera and bright HD screen with optical image stabilization and auto-shutter gesture controls. It is slim and has an extra-bright 520nit rating on a 5.5-inch HD display – making it one of the brightest screens on the market today. Being a 64-bit powered device also means it will be able to take advantage of Google’s future versions of Android that supports high-performance 64-bit computing.

The Vibe Z2 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 64-bit Quad Core 1.4GHz processor and is backed by a 3000mAh battery for all day battery life. It also has 32 GB of internal storage and 4G LTE data speeds while on the go. The VIBE Z2 provides dual SIM support, allowing the phone to support two carrier plans, which can be great for combining work and play in one device or for frequent travelers. But, the camera features is what separates this smartphone from the pack. Its 13-megapixel rear camera offers optical image stabilization and a next-gen Sony Exmor BSI sensor for vibrant night photography. It also comes with an 8-megapixel front camera designed with an anti-distortion lens, balancing images for flawless self-portraits. Finally, the VIBE Z2 comes equipped with beautification features, button-free shutter control, and a new “Instant On” camera feature that allows users to capture a photo quickly from the standby screen.

The VIBE X2 and VIBE Z2 will be available first in China starting in October, and subsequently in Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe and the Middle East in countries where Lenovo smartphones are currently sold. The VIBE X2 will retail at $399 and the VIBE Z2 will retail at $429.

Aside from selfies and smartphones …

The company also continues in its core business with advances in the 2-in-1 ThinkPad Helix for business and the family-friendly HORIZON tabletop PCs with thinner and lighter designs. In addition, Lenovo announced the ThinkCentre Tiny-in-One (TIO) 23, a new way for businesses to customize a secure all-in-one (AIO) desktop solution, and the thinner and lighter Edge 15 dual-mode laptop for consumers.

“Our latest consumer and business PC portfolio demonstrates how we’re innovating to meet the very different needs of these two customer groups,” said Dilip Bhatia, vice president of design and marketing Lenovo’s PC Group. “From the first modular desktop solution and creating a new standard for business 2-in-1s to the next generation of tabletop PC and new multi-mode laptops, we’re committed to delivering products that delight users and help them get more done.”

This expanded portfolio provides tailored solutions to common business user headaches and delight in unexpected ways.

• ThinkPad Helix

To meet the needs of business customers wanting a tablet for when they’re on the go, and a laptop for an extra level of productivity, Lenovo now offers the ThinkPad Helix. Weighing 1.8 pounds and 0.38 inches thick, the ThinkPad Helix sets a high standard for business 2-in-1 Ultrabooks and really ups the ante for business detachable devices with security encryption, premium processing and no moving parts. This Ultrabook uses the new Intel Core M processor, providing better performance and power efficiency than the previous generation. It is constructed in an aluminum finish and still retains the five modes users rely on to stay productive – Tablet, Stand, Tent, Laptop and Desktop.

The ThinkPad Helix includes Windows 8.1 Pro and a suite of add-on security options including biometric fingerprint reader, military-grade smart card reader and three-factor authentication. The 2-in-1 also comes pre-loaded with software offerings like Lenovo Settings, Lenovo Companion 2.0, Lenovo Reach and Lenovo SHAREit. Users can choose between the ThinkPad Helix with Ultrabook Keyboard or the ThinkPad Helix with Ultrabook Pro Keyboard for even more power and battery life. ThinkPad Helix is equipped with Gorilla Glass and a large FHD display that can be paired with an optional ThinkPad digitizer pen for additional usability. In all, the new ThinkPad Helix takes multi-mode computing to the next level and will be available beginning in October starting at $999.

• HORIZON 2s and 2e

Lenovo’s HORIZON tabletop PCs are continuing to redefine the tabletop computing experience for families. They now come in thinner and lighter models and more budget-friendly models with the HORIZON 2s and 2e, respectively. The HORIZON 2s with the “s” representing “slim” epitomizes the concept of a thin and light tabletop PC at just 0.59-inches and just over five pounds – which shaves 10 pounds off the original HORIZON 2. Designed as a dual device for work and play, the new HORIZON tabletop PCs provide the same Stand and Flat modes as previous models, where users can enjoy working in the Windows environment when upright and then lay it flat to play games in Lenovo’s Aura interface. Both models include Lenovo’s advanced Aura multi-user interface that allows two or more people to access their individual photos, videos and music together on the same screen. Aura also now works better with Android devices, allowing users to pair up to four Android devices at one time for quick access to media from their Android smartphone, tablet or other device directly on the PC’s FHD display.

When it’s time to work, an optional premium aluminum stand accessory serves as a charging station with the HORIZON 2s placed at a comfortable height for long term use in Stand Mode. The Horizon 2s suggested retail price is $949. For those on a budget, the new HORIZON 2e comes with a 21.5-inch FHD screen starting at just $749. Both the HORIZON 2s and 2e come with up a 4th generation Intel Core™ processor and Windows 8.1, along with near field communications (optional on the 2e) for a seamless digital content sharing experience, and Bluetooth 4.0 for fast device pairing. Both models feature integrated Dolby Home Theater stereo speakers and optional gaming accessories including joystick, e-Dice and striker. The integrated battery provides up to 2.5 hours of streaming HD via Wi-Fi on the 2s and three hours on the 2e, providing users with enough power to watch their favorite film twice without the hassle of plugging in. They also both come pre-installed with more than 40 multi-user gaming and education applications.

Both models will be available beginning in October.
