Garheng Kong, a former venture capitalist at Intersouth Partners in Durham who now lives in Silicon Valley, is the managing partner of a new venture fund that has raised $110 million.

It’s original target was $50 million.

The fund was announced early Tuesday.

Kogn heads HealthQuest Capital, which is based in Melo Park, Calif., and is sponsored by large VC firm Sofinnova Ventures. Kong left Intersouth in 2010 but remains a frequent visitor to the Triangle and continues to look for investments in the region.

HealthQuest plans to focus on medical devices, diagnostics, healthcare IT, patient care products and consumer over -the-counter care products.

“HealthQuest is focused on funding innovation that can be quantified in terms of both improvements in patient outcomes as well as healthcare economics,” Kogn said in the announcement.

“We believe these opportunities can deliver valuable medical advances that translate into excellent financial returns. “We are excited to launch our debut fund, and appreciate the support of our investors for the HealthQuest strategy and team.”

Kong, who received a medical degree from Duke University, launched HealthQuest Capital in 2013. He was a general partner at Sofinnova.

Other members of the HealthQuest team include:

Partner Randy Scott, Founder and CEO of Novamin Technologies (acquired by GlaxoSmithKline); Partner David Kabakoff, PhD, Co-founder, CEO and Chairman of Salmedix (acquired by Cephalon) and Chairman of Trius (acquired by Cubist); and Venture Partner Tom Callaway MD, President and Founder of Life Science Partner, a leading life science executive search firm. Combined, the full team has significant investing and operating experience in the businesses with which HealthQuest will partner.

HealthQuest already has made investments in three firms. It has opened offices in Georgia, Florida and Southern California.
