The campus that once served as home to thousands of Nortel employees has undergone a complete makeover as Fidelity Investments showed to guests, including Gov. Pat McCrory, on Thursday.

The Boston-based company now employs well mover 1,000 people at the site, with a heavy emphasis on technical support, in the vastly remodeled complex. Fidelity acknowledges that the “majority” of its 3,200 employees in the state work at the RTP complex. It also operates a big data center in Cary and four other “Investor Centers” across the state.

Fidelity won’t discuss how much it has invested in the huge remodeling project. It acquired the four building Nortel complex in 2011 after Nortel had declared bankruptcy.

Fidelity’s complex offers its workers a fitness area, a state-of-the-art cafeteria, plenty of natural light, some unique artwork on the walls, and spacious work areas.

WRALTechWire was given a tour of the campus earlier this year. Check out our slide show of photographs.

Highlights include:

  • Work areas are designed around teams, not individual cubicles
  • A “GuruBar” that offers employees hands-on technical support

Fidelity has maintained a presence in RTP since acquiring an IBM business group of some 450 workers 11 years ago.
