Fedora, the open source operating system based on Linux and sponsored by Red Hat, is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the worldwide collaboration project with a new release.

Fedora 20 honors former Red Hat developer and Fedora contributor Seth Vidal, who died in July. Vidal was killed in a hit-and-run accident.

“Fedora 20 is … dedicated to Seth Vidal, a dedicated, tireless, and brilliant contributor and the lead developer of Yum [software] and the Fedora update repository,” the Fedora Project said. “Seth touched the lives of hundreds of Fedora contributors directly, and millions indirectly by improving the experience of using and updating Fedora.”

A complete operating system, Fedora is available free of charge.

A variety of new and improved features are incorporated in the latest release, including support for ARM chip technology that is gaining traction in mobile devices. Fedora 20 also incorporates additional “cloud” computing and virtualization technology.

“For 10 years, Fedora has not only led the way as a cutting-edge, open operating system, but the Fedora Project has also served as a paradigm for other open source communities on a global scale,” said Robyn Bergeron, the  Fedora Project Leader. ”Fedora 20 continues Fedora’s history of delivering innovative technologies ahead of the curve, bringing to bear new features that better enable virtualization and cloud computing within the operating system. Additionally, Fedora 20 builds upon community feedback, delivering advanced maturity features to address the needs of the most advanced users.”

Fedora can run alongside Microsoft Windows and Mac OS.
