A new air monitoring system powered by solar panels will get the spotlight at when it is unveiled at a Durham library on Saturday.

The system is incorporated into a park bench that itself is made from recycled milk jugs. The prototype monitoring system was developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It will now be tested at Durham County’s South Regional Library in partnership with Durham County. The project came out of EPA’s Village Green Project, which aims to develop the next generation of air quality monitors for use by states, tribes and communities.

The library ceremony at 4505 S. Alston Ave. is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and is open to the public.
