Chapel Hill-based Strata Solar announced plans Monday for a solar farm in Duplin County that would be the biggest in the state and rival the largest solar farms on the east coast. The project, once complete, would generate enough electricity to support more than 10,000 homes.

Strata is applying for regulatory approval this month, with an eye toward breaking ground on the project before the end of the calendar year. Construction would take about a year and involve up to 400 people.

“The addition of a solar farm of this magnitude solidifies North Carolina as a player in the national solar landscape,” said Strata CEO Markus Wilhelm.
