Digitalsmiths’ announcement Monday about a new office in Denver just may be a taste of plenty more good news to come.

The Durham-based startup is growing rapidly, looking to hire in the Triangle as well as in Denver, and is mulling possible expansion overseas.

Meanwhile, investors are knocking on the doors.

So says Betsy Carr, the senior marketing manager at the venture capital-backed firm.

The coming is growing quickly organically with an expanding list of high-profile customers, but when people with money are interested in making a deal – who knows what might happen.

“Digitalsmiths does not currently need any additional funding,” Carr explains. “We are, however, actively exploring international expansion and have interest from companies that would like to invest.”

The company’s proprietary video data technology enables such services as personalized search, personalized recommendations, “mood discovery” and “social discovery.”

Digitalsmiths last raised funding in 2011, according to SEC filings. It has raised some $30 million to date. The Series C round in 2011 included a new investor, Technicolor, which led the round. Also participating were Digitalsmith’s existing investors, including Cisco, Chrysalis Ventures, Capitol Broadcasting, .406 Ventures, and Aurora Funds. Capitol Broadcasting is the parent company of WRAL Tech Wire and WRAL.com.

The company launched in 2006 and now has more than 70 employees.

TheSkinny asked Carr a series of questions about the Denver expansion and its hiring plans.

  • Why did Digitalsmiths choose to expand in Denver? Why not in Durham?

We are hiring/expanding in both locations.

The Denver office will differ greatly from our Durham office as it’s the first of its kind in our industry that gives video service providers the ability to simulate actual deployments of personalized video search and recommendations using real metadata across all connected devices.

We chose Denver due to it being centrally located with our customers. It’s important to spend time face to face with customers, and we want our customers to know we are local to them.

  • How many people will staff the new center? Are these new hires?

We are aggressively hiring in both the Denver and Durham, NC offices.

Over the course of the next 12 months we expect 10 – 15 employees to be based in Denver.

These employees will be new hires.

  • Will any Digitalsmith executives be moving to Denver, and who will be managing the office?

Our Durham employees will visit the Denver office frequently to further support our partners and provide best practices. The office will be managed by a senior team member to be determined.

  • Is Digitalsmiths hiring in Durham at this time? If so, in what areas?

As a result of our continued success, Digitalsmiths is aggressively hiring in both locations. We have openings in engineering, product and operations.
