New patent

Also this week, Evanne Timberlake of the UNC-CH North Carolina Business News Wire, reported that Cree secured a patent for an LED light that disperses heat better.

Cree has 1,482 patents issued in the United States, and 2,582 issued in foreign counties, as well as over 3,100 patents pending approval, according to its website.

The patent is for an LED light that can be used in various high-luminance area lighting applications such as roadways, factories, parking lots and commercial buildings, according to the filing.

The inventors, David P. Goelz, Craig Raleigh, Don Miletich and Kurt S. Wilcox, took into consideration three key issues — the increasing demand for LED, the difficulty to achieve high levels of illumination over large areas of distribution and the need to minimize common LED problems, such as heat dissipation.

With this patent, Cree addressed the need for heat to be transferred away from the LEDs to avoid thermal damage. Another issue is protecting the LEDs from elements such as water while mounted in various locations.
